Initially I went to a store to get a HD Mino so I could record in the studio and on location “behind the scenes” shoot photography for my company. The employee I talked to handed Flip UltraHD to me saying, “It does not come out for another week, but its cheaper than the Mino, which is on sale.” It ‘was a no-brainer for me to pick up.
This litte unit fits in the back pocket, if necessary, and the controls are very simple – to click the big red button to record. Click the big red button to again to stop. Simplicity at its finest.
I like that the unit which has a USB port built right in, but I still use a USB extension, because I’m using an iMac, and since it ends up upside down, I will not add stress to the USB hub.
I did not use the built-in editing software, as I am importing my files into iMovie and edit this.
Quality wise, I’d say is pretty darn good considering its about the size of a box of sweet-Necci valentine candy hearts. However, I must reiterate that must be used as a still “fixed” lens, and not to use the digital zoom. Once you use the digital zoom, quality, or * any * digital zoom, suffers a lot. To remedy this, I super-glued a step-down ring in the front of my Ultra HD so I can screw on a wide angle and a telephoto lens. If you do not mind Frankenstein-ing your Ultra HD, then go for it.
I have not done very low-light shooting, but I have a feeling you might get a bit ‘noisy and grainy. The results are displayed as soon as possible when you start to use this within the study.
I’ll be mainly using my Ultra HD on a tripod to record the background of my photo sessions, so I will have to keep the camera static, not moving around.
Overall, I think this is really worth $ 199 I paid for. You must remember that this is a device Dinky little ‘with a tiny sensor, so the quality will not be as good as a dedicated video camera biggest, or one of the latest DSLR with built in high definition. Apples to oranges.
With a little extra money and some super-glue, you can get more reach and wide angle units.
